Competition for Creativity and Collaboration at This Public Arts Spectacular Will Be Fierce

2014 marks the tenth installment of “Windows on Main Street,” Beacon’s annual public art exhibition. In celebration, and unlike in the past, “WOMSX,” will have a competitive flair. Thirty local artists have been challenged to create a unique piece of art inspired by and installed in a business along Beacon’s Main Street, competing for juried awards and prizes.

Prizes include a $1000 “Grand Prize” juried by the show’s founders, a “Gallerist’s Pick” juried by 5 local gallerists, and a “People’s Choice” juried by the public via online voting. The installations will be judged on qualities such as originality, craftsmanship, composition and presentation, use of space, relevance, and collaboration.

In 2005, Windows on Main Street began as a way to connect Beacon’s residents, businesses and artists. The original idea was to use art as a catalyst for economic growth and to create an open dialogue amongst all members of the community. In the beginning, artists were challenged to create a dynamic, site-specific installation in a commercial window that reflected a combination of the artist’s style and unique qualities of the business.

What to expect in 2014:

  • Windows on Main Street opens August 9 and run through September 13, 2014.
  • Free to the public, open 24/7 along the length of Main Street, Beacon NY.
  • Opening Party will be held on Saturday, August 9, 6-8pm at Bank Sq, 129 Main St
  • Closing Party & Awards Ceremony will be held on Saturday, August 13, 6-8pm at Quinn’s, 330 Main St

Maps will be available in the shops on Main, as well as at Beacon’s Visitor Center throughout the month. You can track the progress of the installations and find a dynamic online map by visiting www.beaconwindows.org for more information and past exhibitions.
