A visit to Opus 40 Sculpture Park & Museum(a National Historic Place  located in Saugerties, NY) is a rich and fulfilling experience for adults and kids alike. Walking around the 6 ½ acre sculpture, the visual breadth transforms your experience as you make your way across the sculpture, curling around trees and natural quarry springs.

One can walk through, around, and over it, from its subterranean pathways 16 feet underground, and then three stories above, to the 9-ton monolith that is the epicenter and summit of the sculpture. Opus 40 is an awe-inspiring environment set against the backdrop vista of Overlook Mountain.

Constructed by one man over a period of 37 years, Harvey Fite created this labyrinth world of finely fitted stone by hand. The use of dry-key stone techniques adapted from the Mayans allowed him to embrace the indigenous bluestone, creating curving ramps and terraces diligently pieced together.

Over the years, Harvey Fite acquired land (more than 70 acres today) and built several structures including a large wood home, a working studio, a garage and blacksmith shop and the Quarryman’s Museum.

Enjoy the grounds at Opus 40. Explore the sculpture, hiking, the Quarryman’s Museum, gift shop and Art Gallery.

Visit Opus 40 by September 30th and we will give you your choice of 1) a beautiful 11 x 17 poster of Opus 40 or 2) a monograph booklet on Harvey Fite’s Opus 40.
