4:30 Pre-Parade Festivities followed at 6:30 by Tree Lightings & Parade, 7:15 Fireworks, 7:30 Organ Concert and at 8:00 Film Screening

The Celebration of Lights will once again kick off this year’s holiday season in downtown Poughkeepsie with a night of free entertainment, refreshments and fun. Every year, thousands look forward to this dazzling fête, which has been voted by Dutchess County Tourism as the “Best Event” of the season.

The Celebration of Lights Parade will be led by Mayor John Tkazyik and members of the Common Council with the Amerscott Highland Pipers, Poughkeepsie High School Jazz Ensemble and Middle School Choir, Poughkeepsie Exempt Fireman’s Association Color Guard, DARE, Arlington Rotary Club, Columbia Elementary School PTA, Dutchess County Girl & Boy Scouts and several Hudson Valley Philharmonic brass ensembles. Also joining in the parade will be performances by Arm of the Sea Theatre and IABAS Traditional Brazilian Band with 200 children from Warring, Morse and Kreiger elementary schools. Thunder Road Cruisers will supply several classic (50’s/60’s) cars plus a float representing the club. And Al’s Garage will also supply a float and hay ride. Finally Santa Claus will arrive on a Fire Engine.

River District establishments including Amici’s, The Derby, Caffe Aurora, Mahoney’s, Milanese, Noah’s Ark, River Station, and Caffe Bocca will offer entertainment and food and beverage specials all evening.

And for the grand finale, Legion Fireworks will present the only winter fireworks display along the Poughkeepsie waterfront.

Afterward, revelers will warm up at the Bardavon with a pipe organ concert featuring the theater’s Mighty Wurlitzer and a film presentation. The Goonies is an American adventure-comedy film directed by Richard Donner. The screenplay was written by Chris Columbus from a story by executive producer Steven Spielberg. The premise surrounds a band of pre-teens who live in the “Goon Docks” neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon hoping to save their homes from demolition. After discovering an old Spanish map, they head off on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willie, a legendary 17th-century pirate. Seats are only $5.


4:30-6:00pm    First Tree Lighting, Hosted by Middle Main Poughkeepsie att The Salvation Army, 19 Pershing Avenue. Featuring free food, hot drinks, arts and crafts. Vassar College’s “Bright Nights” will distribute clothing and food for those in need.

6:30 pm           Parade begins at Main and Garden Streets and Second Tree Lighting at Main near Market (time is approximate)

6:45pm            Parade continues down Main Street

7:15 pm           Third Tree Lighting at Dongan Square Park at Clover Street

7:15 pm           Fireworks and Fourth Tree Lighting on the Walkway

7:30 pm           Concert featuring the Mighty Wurllitzer Pipe Organ at the Bardavon

8:00 pm           Screening of The Goonies at the Bardavon
