Sinterklaas 2014You’ve heard of Santa Claus. But have you heard of Sinterklaas? His spirit and the various traditions attached to him are dear to the hearts of many in the Mid-Hudson Valley. The actual tradition of Sinterklaas comes from the Netherlands, brought by Dutch settlers who arrived in Rhinebeck over 300 years ago.

Sinterklaas, the patron of children and sailors, today, is more a non-denominational, joyful, colorful, day into dusk community festival that is free and open to all. It offers an opportunity to embrace friends and family and share in a variety of activities, capped by a Starlight parade of stars and flags held aloft and Grumpuses and giant puppets and laughter and yes, Sinterklaas! The celebration features over 100 musicians, actors, magicians and other magical performers to town to entertain.

Be sure to grab a program booklet, read it here–to decide what to know, where to start and better yet, who to invite to join in!
