In between its flagship cities, the Hudson Valley is filled with small, historic towns that are imbued with rich cultural legacy. When it comes to these lesser known gems, Millbrook is a quaint, can’t-miss destination for anyone craving that genuine small-town charm. If you are headed to Dutchess County for a visit, here are some of the top attractions Millbrook has to offer.

If you’re an avid green thumb, a landscape painter, or just a general lover of nature, add Innisfree Garden to your bucket list. Offering 185 acres of immaculate Japanese-style gardens and landscaping, Innisfree is recognized as one of the most beautiful gardens on the planet and offers both guided tours and private event hosting.

Passing through in the morning? Stop in at Millbrook Diner, where quirky aesthetics meet a classic Americana-style menu. Generous portions and a hearty atmosphere invoke the tender spirit of the town itself. Pick a tune on the jukebox, slide into the booth for a cozy meal, and leave with a bottle of the diner’s very own Kardamas extra virgin olive oil.

After an omelet and hash browns, get up close and personal with some furry friends at the Trevor Zoo at Millbrook School. The only zoo in the country housed at a high school, this one-of-a-kind destination was established in 1936 and houses more than 180 exotic and local species ranging from otters to owls and red pandas. Children under age four are admitted free.

Stroll through the Millbrook Vineyards and Winery and indulge in what the New York Times has called “the Hudson Valley’s flagship winery.” For over 30 years, the winery has offered a world-class wine tasting experience of estate vintages ranging from Chardonnay to Riesling in an idyllic setting. Millbrook Vineyards and Winery is open year-round and also offers guided educational tours.

When you’ve finished adventuring and are ready to refuel, head to Cafe Les Baux for an elegant bistro experience. Chef Herve Bochard maintains the highest sourcing standards to offer both Millbrook residents and visitors alike authentic French cuisine. Pair your meal with a wine from the extensive list of French vintages.

If the rich gastronomy of France isn’t for you, head to the Millbrook Cafe, which offers authentic 19th-century dishes prepared in a wood-fired brick oven and grill. The cafe offers a diverse fine dining experience that is enhanced by the rustic atmosphere. Choose from rich and flavorful dishes like the New Zealand rack of lamb or the Cajun shrimp and leave happy and full.
