FAIRGROUNDS HOSTS NYS SHEEP & WOOL FAMILY FESTIVAL

One of the Northeast’s truly unique events, the NYS Sheep and Wool Family Festival, is scheduled to return to the Dutchess County Fairgrounds on Oct 19 and 20 in Rhinebeck NY.

The 41- year -old event, features hundreds of sheep, llamas and alpacas, as well as Angora and Cashmere goats, a fleece show and sale, Border Collie Sheep dog herding demonstrations, crafts vendors, book signings and more.

The NYS Sheep and Wool Family Festival is the largest show of its kind in the United States. The event showcases a strong and viable industry in Dutchess County and the entire state of New York with two days of exceptional livestock shows and over two hundred and fifty fiber artists and craftsmen presenting sheep related products. Visitors can purchase skeins of yarn, hand-crafted wool clothing, fleece coats, baby blankets, mittens, socks, angora scarves, natural dyes, spinning wheels, looms, jewelry and glassware with sheep motifs and hundreds of other unique and rare purchases.

Dozens of food vendors will present everything from lamb stew to shish kabobs to hot fudge sundaes. Cooking demonstrations by professional chefs will be held in the Harvest Kitchen in the Arts and Crafts building throughout the weekend. Specialty foods and wine tastings are presented in the same building and add to the continuous culinary choices.

Children’s programs abound both days of the festival and ongoing activities include: a petting zoo, Canine Frisbee demonstrations, Ed The Wizard,  ‘Frogs, Bugs and Animal Shows’, Mad Science demonstrations and “Tales of Yarn”, stories for 4-6 year olds by Susanna Leonard.

NYS Sheep and Wool Family Festival hours are 9am to 5pm on Saturday, Oct 19 and 10am to 5pm on Sunday, October 20. Admission is $12 for adults and children under 12 are admitted free. Weekend passes are $17. Tickets can be purchased online in advance for $9.
