Whether they came by plane, train or automobile it was clear one thing! Their destination was the first Country Living Fair on the east coast…RHINEBECK, New York! Yes, by the time the gates opened at 10 am yesterday, hundreds and hundreds of cars had found their way and No rain was going to stop them.  Just as the many different umbrellas dotted the morning fairgrounds at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds so had the people…fans of Country Life Magazine and the fair with the same name.

We exclusively sat down with the Country Living Magazine, Editor in Chief; Sarah Gray Miller and talked about the event and curious to find what brought them here to the Hudson Valley!

Turns out Country Living Magazine is partial to the Hudson Valley with many of its staffers and contributors living in the region including Sarah Gray Miller who has a home in Athens and talks about it from time to time in her monthly column. Even while we were speaking, a few excited fans of the magazine came up to speak with her and tell her how much they love the publication and her comments about the home town approach.  It turns out the hometown approach that so many admire across the country can be found right here in Rhinebeck! Sarah admits “This is our version of country to-do fair in our own backyard. If you had to dream up a Country life town it would be Rhinebeck.”

The first Country Fair Magazine was in Chicago in 2006, the next was in Columbus, Ohio in 2008 and then Atlanta! Sarah admits even her first fair blew her away. “I blew my bank account and then had to figure how to get all these larger items home on the airplane.”

This Weekend in Rhinebeck, over 200 antique dealers, artisans and experts are on hand for a weekend of amazing shopping, free seminars, demonstrations and more. This is a unique opportunity to meet Cari Cucksey of HGTV, The Cooking Channel’s, Fabulous  Beekman Boys and others!

What are the hot trends for 2013? Sarah says “Things that give texture.  Wood items, galvanized metal, woven baskets, rugs and knobby baskets”.

Luckily, the rain promises to stay away Saturday and Sunday June 8th and 9th.
