Christine Howlett, Vassar College Director of Choral Music, to Conduct at Handel’s Messiah Sing-In at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center
Staff | December 12, 2011 | CommentChristine Howlett, Vassar College Director of Choral Music and Artistic Director of Cappella Festiva, will be a participating conductor in the annual Handel’s Messiah Sing-In on Tuesday evening, December 20, 2011 at 7:30 pm at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center.
The Sing-In, New York’s most popular holiday season singing event, brings 3,000 choral singers to Avery Fisher Hall each December to celebrate the holidays by singing Messiah under the leadership of 17 distinguished choral conductors. Each conductor leads the audience-chorus in one of the choruses from Handel’s masterpiece.
For the past 44 years, the traditional Sing-In has included nearly every prominent choral conductor in the New York metropolitan area. The audience-chorus includes residents of the City and suburbs, as well as visitors from many other parts of the country and abroad.
Among the 17 distinguished conductors in this year’s Sing-In are Christine Howlett, Vassar College Director of Choral Music; Martin Josman, The National Chorale, Music Director; Gail Archer, Barnard-Columbia Chorus, Columbia University, Director; Gregory Hopkins, The Harlem Opera Theater, Artist Director; and Gary Thor Wedow, The Juilliard School. Caren Levine, assistant conductor at the Metropolitan Opera, will be at Avery Fisher Hall’s grand organ.
Soloists for this year’s Sing-In are Zulimar Lopez Hernandez, soprano; Rebecca Ringle, alto; Scott Murphree, tenor; and James Bobick, bass.
The Sing-In belongs to its audience of dedicated choral singers at Avery Fisher Hall and across the United States. National Choral Council has presented Messiah Sing-Ins in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Rochester, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Tulsa, Phoenix, Denver, Seattle, and at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.
