Here is a little history and a reprint from the Armed Forces Day on the Hudson Website:
Armed Forces Day was created by President Harry S. Truman in 1949 to honor Americans serving in our military and to thank them for their patriotic services. Before Armed Forces Day, there were separate days to celebrate the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and the Marines. President Truman combined all of these separate celebrations into one unified annual Armed Forces Day following the consolidation of the military services in the US Department of Defense.
This year, for the first time ever, Dutchess County and all of our Hudson Valley neighbors will come together to celebrate Armed Forces Day. The festivities will be held on Sunday, May 19th, at Waryas Park on the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie. The agenda for the day is still being put together and we need your help. There will be ceremonial events, activities for the whole family, and a BBQ (discounted for veterans) and information booths for veterans.
