Breezy Hill Orchard and Cider Mill’s Spring Wassail Balkan Music Festival-May 10th
Staff | May 6, 2014 | CommentOn Saturday May 10, 2014, Breezy Hill Orchard and Cider Mill will celebrate the ancient Celtic ritual Wassail with a festival, and songs and singing to the apple trees to ensure a bountiful harvest.
To honor the farms, there will be a sumptuous and filling feast of local, artisan food, including a lamb roast and wood-fired pizza. The event will feature traditional folk-style dancing to live Balkan and Macedonian Romani music for Djurdjevdan/ Herdelezi (St. George’s Day).
This year will include the music of Zlatne Uste, an internationally known group of American-born musicians playing traditional music of the Balkans, primarily representing Serbian, Macedonian, Bulgarian and Romani traditions. They are well known for their production of the popular Golden Festival in Brooklyn.
Seido Salifoski, a Macedonian Roma who has played dumbek in Balkan and Middle Eastern styles for thirty years, will preform with his group Romski Boji. He is known for his unique virtuosity in the U.S., Canada and Europe. Versatile dancer and teacher Steve Kotansky will conduct a dance workshop. Many other guests and surprises will be announced.
There will be hard cider barrel tastings, featuring new bourbon-aged blend, and the Celtic goddess of cider will make her debut.
