A three-week comedy festival in Kingston, New York featuring headliners Kathy Griffin & Lewis Black
Staff | March 7, 2013 | CommentThe Bardavon is pleased to announce Serious Laughs: Art | Politics | Humor from April 20 to May 12, 2013 in Kingston, New York. This is the spring kick-off event of The 4 Seasons of the Hudson Valley Festival, the Bardavon’s first-ever year-long celebration of the arts and culture of the Mid-Hudson Valley, made possible in part by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). This spring season event, Serious Laughs, will be a three-week celebration of comedy featuring two visual arts exhibitions and comic headliners Kathy Griffin on Sunday, April 21, and Lewis Black on Sunday, April 28, at UPAC.
Additional guest comics (to be announced) will play in nightclubs and restaurants across Kingston – in Uptown’s Backstage Productions; Midtown’s Keegan Ales and Frank Guido’s Little Italy; and Downtown’s Rondout Music Lounge, Savona’s and Mariner’s Harbor, with dates and times and additional venues to be announced.
Two visual art exhibitions organized by independent curator and Kingston resident Daniel Mason will open on Saturday, April 20 at UPAC and the Kingston Public Library and run through May 12. The exhibitions will feature the work of Cindy Sherman, Alison Bechdel, Sanford Biggers, John Cage, Ken Landauer, Kalup Linzy, William Pachner, Tim Davis, Pat Oleszko, Liliana Porter, and others to be announced.
Free workshops to create comedic masks, visual elements, and texts led by Alex Kahn and Sophia Michahelles (of Processional Arts Workshop), in collaboration with playwright Casey Kurtti, will cover a variety of visual and verbal techniques, culminating in an absurdist improvised performance. Workshops will be held at UPAC and the Kingston Public Library and are open to all ages but geared toward adults and teens. More information is forthcoming at:www.bardavon.org
Kathy Griffin will perform on Sunday, April 21 at 7pm at UPAC. A two-time Emmy winner, NY Times bestselling author, four-time Grammy nominee, and Broadway darling, Griffin is a multi-faceted performer with rapid-fire wit, who has been making audiences laugh for years discussing Hollywood gossip and celebrity blunders.
Tickets for Kathy Griffin go on sale to Bardavon Members Friday March 1 at 11am and to the general public on Thursday, March 7 at 11am, and are $75 Golden Circle, $60 Adults, and $55 Members.
Lewis Black will perform on Sunday, April 28 at 7pm at UPAC. Black’s live performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for his audience — he yells so they don’t have to. A passionate performer who is more ticked-off optimist than mean-spirited curmudgeon, Black has perfected expressing what the rest of us cannot say in polite company.
Tickets for Lewis Black are on sale now and are: $80 Golden Circle, $55 Adults, and $50 Members.
