On Saturday, October 8th, the Garden Conservancy, which makes America’s finest private gardens available to the public, presents the Brine Garden, located at 21 Bluebird Inn Road, Pawling, NY, from 12 to 6 p.m., rain or shine.

The Brine Garden is a private botanical garden created by principal landscape designer Duncan Brine, of Horticultural Design Inc., a landscape design and installation firm, specializing in native plants and naturalistic gardens since 1984. Duncan is also an instructor at the New York Botanical Garden and the New England Wild Flower Society.

In fall, the six acre Brine Garden is an oasis of color: leaves and berries. Two 1920’s farmhouses create an old fashioned ambiance. The Brine’s home and office overlook a marsh and glade while sitting on a dry cliff which is home to cactus. Naturalistic and garden areas blend, while native plants from the owner’s nursery link the garden to its Hudson Valley setting.

A new book, Gardens of the Hudson Valley with a forward by the New York Botanical Gardens President, Gregory Long, has a chapter on The Brine Garden and compares it to Russel Wright’s Manitoga in Garrison, NY. The Brine Garden is on the front cover of Timber Press’s 50 Beautiful Deer Resistant Plants by Ruth Rogers Clausen and has also been featured in the New York Times, Horticulture Magazine, the American Gardener, Hudson Valley Magazine and other publications.

At a recent lecture given at the Horticultural Society of New York, Anne Raver of the New York Times, said the Brine Garden was one of her favorites, “Duncan and Julia Brine have created six acres of wild, painterly gardens.”

A map of the Brine Garden and a plant list will be given out to guests on October 8th. The Garden Conservancy’s  five-dollar admission is shared with FROGS, Friends of the Great Swamp.
