Robert Erskine:
General George Washington’s Map Maker: Thursday, July 19th, 7 P.M.

This presentation traces the career of Robert Erskine, a Scottish-born engineer and inventor. He was manager of the Ringwood Ironworks in New Jersey. Appointed surveyor of roads for the Continental Army, Erskine produced hundreds of maps that materially aided Washington’s operations. The Hudson Highlands and Northern New Jersey were extensively mapped by him. The mapping of these areas will be discussed and samples of Erskine’s work will be on display.
