The Property at The High Falls

Slowly but surely winter is ending, and the advent of warmer weather can only mean one thing for upstaters: Hiking! A solid hike at some of our great nature preserves is perhaps the one thing that really can’t be enjoyed as much in urban areas. The solitude of nature and serene calm of rustling branches and yeah, yeah, yeah you’re saying, give it a rest Thoreau. Waxing poetic aside, here are three great bed and breakfasts with exceptional access to some of the best hiking in the area. Book your stays early because it’s only getting warmer!

1) The High Falls

Price/night: $200 + up
Accommodations: 3 Bedrooms
Max guests: 6+
Min stay: 2 nights
House description:
The High Falls is located in picturesque, you guessed it, High Falls New York. Nestled in between Rosendale and Stone Ridge, High Falls is often overlooked, but for our money is one the best little towns in the valley. This gorgeous property is located just a couple minutes from the town of High Falls, located on 4+ acres of undeveloped forest with excellent access to local hiking trails that include a waterfall, which is definitely one of the top 5 best things for a hiking trail to include. The decor is also top notch, with a great balance between rustic and more modern touches.

“We had a lovely time in this quiet and elegant house in the woods. Everything was as described – super comfortable bed, great kitchen, perfect location. One highlight was watching, through the double sliding doors, a family of deer congregate at dusk in the snow at the forest’s edge. Julian is a perfect host. The house was welcoming and clean. Instructions on how to find all we needed were clear and available. When we got 4 inches of snow, he reassured us in advance that the driveway would be promptly plowed, which it was — twice, as we had a 2nd storm in 4 days!. In addition, plenty of storage for clothes etc. and open surfaces for our stuff. We were sorry to leave! and would return gladly.”

Price/night: $400
Accommodations: Entire Home, 3 Bedrooms, 3 Beds
Max guests: 6
Min stay: 5

How much is enough when it comes to acreage? 86 should be plenty, and when you throw in two private lakes and hiking trails throughout the property you’ve definitely got our attention. The house too is quaint and tastefully decorated, and the lighting in particular really does it for us. But our favorite part is the stone patio on the lake, which looks like the perfect place to relax after a long day of hiking.

Price/night: $250
Accommodations: Entire Home, 3 Bedrooms, 8 Beds
Max guests: 12

If you’d like some space to stretch out both inside and outside, this is the place for you. Huge living spaces and three bedrooms leave plenty of room for you and some friends, and at only $250 a night, the rates are very reasonable split among several people. Set in idyllic Cold Spring, the home is closeby some of the best hiking in the valley on nearby bull hill or the ominously named Breakneck Ridge. There’s also a tree swing which you wouldn’t get us off without a fight.

Linda’s home was welcoming and beyond lovely. It’s open kitchen/living room space made us wish we were there with friends, but with a cozy fire in the fireplace, it felt perfect for just our little family too. Proximity to Cold Spring and Beacon was great, and the views from the living room & master bedroom were exceptional. I hope we can visit again!
